About Bishop Heber College

Bishop Heber College is an autonomous institution and is reaccredited with A+ level by NACC. The college is set in beautiful surroundings, seeks to function through mutual love and respect. Many of the academic programmes of the college are designed to contribute to the cultural, social and economic growth and life of the region.

It was the first college in India to offer a three year undergraduate programme in Library and Information Science. The department was established in 1983 with 20 students and 2 staff members. In 1992, two year postgraduate programme was introduced in the place B.Sc. (LIS). The postgraduate programme strikes a balance between theory and practice that meets both the demands of a rapidly evolving subject and employability.
The well resourced department has five academic staff, who develop and train 30 young students every year. The department prepares its manpower to skillfully manage and exploit information- whatever its from in the information society.

So far more than 200 undergraduate and 425 postgraduate students have gone out of the department. Many of the alumni are occupying prominent positions in Indian Libraries and Abroad.

The department has started M.Phil. regular programme from the academic year 2004-2005.
